What Should You Discuss with Your Doctor After a Car Accident?

After you are involved in a car accident, it may seem as though you don’t have a second to relax and figure out what has happened. However, one thing you need to put a priority on is your health and overall well-being. Even if you feel like you have only suffered minor injuries, you need to get to the doctor as soon as possible.

Some of the most common injuries that occur in a crash, such as whiplash, may not be noticeable until several days or even weeks after being involved in the accident. Even simple stiffness or bruising can be an indication that you have suffered a more serious injury than what you may realize.

While you are at your doctor’s appointment, you need to ask a few important questions. The answers to these questions will help while you are recovering from the accident and may help you file a lawsuit to recover damages.

Additional Health Concerns

A top priority should be to ensure you raise any concerns you may have about the injuries you sustained or any symptoms or potential side affects you experience. Don’t be afraid to mention concerns you have related to your future. Your physician may be able to provide you advice on seeing an orthopedic specialist or chiropractor, or set up an ongoing care plan to help reduce the potential of long-term damage.

It may also be a good idea to have x-rays done of parts of the body if you are still suffering from limited mobility or experiencing pain. Neck and back injuries are often extremely difficult to diagnose properly without having x-rays done. You should also tell your doctor about any symptoms or pain that has changed since the accident took place. Make sure you don’t leave any (even the smallest) details out.

Paid Time Off from Work

If you have injuries that are severe enough that you feel as though you can’t handle your normal tasks at work without having a great amount of difficulty or experiencing pain, you should request a doctor’s note to receive the time off from work that is needed so you can fully recover. In some cases, symptoms of an injury after a car accident won’t present themselves right away. As a result, you may need to take time off and have your doctor provide an excuse or note for your employer.

The majority of workplaces will be sympathetic regarding taking time off after an accident. In some cases, you may even be able to receive temporary disability after a serious accident occurs. You need to give yourself plenty of time to heal so you can get your life back to normal. Don’t ever leave your doctor’s office without requesting time off.

If you have suffered injuries after a car accident, you need to get to the doctor right away. You can also work with an attorney to find out if you need any other information regarding the injuries you suffered.
