Boca Raton IVC Filter Lawsuit Lawyer
IVC filters, also known as “inferior vena cava filters“, are medical devices made of wire and have an appearance similar to that of a spider. The metal extremities of the filter can fracture and be transported by the bloodstream to important organs.
The filters are implanted in the inferior vena cava vein, in order to filter blood clots that travel from the lower portions of the body to the heart and lungs. These clots often develop in the deep leg veins and are called “deep vein thrombosis” or “DVT“.
Once they reach the lungs they can present serious, often fatal, dangers to human health. Those at greatest risk, and for whom medication is ineffective, are often recommended to have surgical implantation of an IVC filter to prevent these types of occurrences. FDA Warns Against Implanting These IVC Filters Because They Can Break Apart And Move Through A Person’s Veins
BARD IVC filter lawsuits are forming after the medical device failed, fractured, or migrated within the body of patients who had received the implant. IVC filters are used in patients who are at risk of pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot that reaches the lungs.
Usually, doctors will try anticoagulants but some patients cannot receive these, or they don’t work. The BARD IVC filter traps blood clots from the lower parts of the body before they reach the lungs. The filter is meant to be temporary, and is made so that doctors can remove the filter when the risk of pulmonary embolism is over.
The trouble alleged in Bard IVC filter lawsuits is that these devices fracture. In some cases they fail, and in others they move or migrate to places in the body where removal becomes difficult or dangerous.
Splinters of the medical device travel through the bloodstream and can travel toward the heart or lungs or anywhere else and cause internal damage. Migration can result in the filter becoming lodged in parts of the body causing serious injury or even death.
In August of 2010, the FDA urged physicians who advise their patients to use an IVC filter to consider the risk and benefits for individual patients, instead of simply choosing an IVC for all patients who are ineligible for anti coagulation treatment. In addition, the FDA urges physicians to remove the IVC filters once the symptoms have gone away.
